Manic Monday Bonus--In The Days Before Line Extensions

CORRECTED: A house ad in Iron Man Annual #5 (1982)(click to embiggen):

"All four titles"??? All FOUR titles? You mean that in 1982, Iron Man and Cap and Thor and the Avengers had only 4 titles between them??

Man, no wonder my wallet seemed fuller back in those days...

Hate to tell you this, but are you sure you didn't 19'80'? It's probably a later year, even, but not 1990. Captain Marvel II hadn't been introduced yet obviously, because she's shadowed in a silhouette, while She Hulk's first series has obviously finished, though at the same time, she still hasn't received her second one, as shown by her statement. The West Coast Avengers hasn't started yet; if it did, and this was 1990, there would be five books shown and advertised. And finally, Hawkeye's statement clearly shows that he hasn't received his first mini-series yet.

Yes, I'm being a smart-alek, but don't take it the wrong way. ;)

Having real trouble posting today...

Was this ad from 1982, rather than 1990, as Captain Marvel joined the Avengers in 1982.

There were a few more Avengers titles in 1990 (6 I think), Avengers, West Coast Avengers, Avengers Spotlight, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, followed by Wonder Man in 1991.

If you count Spider-Man and Wolverine, I'd guess over half of Marvel's output is linked to the Avengers nowadays? No wonder I can't follow comics anymore. Well, that and the less than stellar writing.

Mea culpa. I had several issues open, and grabbed the wrong one when writing down the issue number the ad was from. It was really, of course, Iron Man Annual #5 (1982). Oops.

The post has been corrected.

And the cover price (of a "King Size Annual"!) was only $1.

Nick: Don't forget Quasar, who was a member of West Coast, and had his own book at the time.

Good catch, I'd forgotten about the Quasar title!

Brill ad, I've never seen it. I can't recall any other amusing ads in Marvel Comics (psst, challenge!)
